CREATING MORE VALUE FOR SOCIETY

Conscious of the tax-privileged status of The Thomas Foundation as a Prescribed Private Fund, David Thomas sees its overarching objective as "to create more value for society".

The Thomas Foundation has embraced four steps advocated by Professors Michael Porter and Mark Kramer in their paper Philanthropy's New Agenda: Creating Value written for the Harvard Business Review, 1999. The four steps are:
    1. selecting only high-performing grantees;
    2. helping grantees develop stronger capabilities;
    3. assisting them in attracting other funds; and
    4. helping them develop and disseminate knowledge in the fields in which they work.
