Around 1 million animal, plant, bird, reptile, amphibian and fish species living on this planet have been scientifically described - and some people estimate that as many as 25 million more are still to be documented. We know so little about our world, and yet at the present rate of loss of the world's native animals, plants and forests (its biodiversity) some species may be described only after their demise.
